A flying reptile with a large bony fin on its snout, the Caiuajara had a tough beak and no teeth. It could boast a wingspan of over 2 metres, and these sociable flying reptiles lived in colonies of mature adults. They likely matured in nurseries of young and sub-mature animals living together.
Discovery
The Caiuajara was discovered in a rare pterosaur bone bed known as the Pterosaur Graveyard. Dating from the Upper Cretaceous, this site included at least 47 different individuals. Found in southern Brazil, where once had been a Cretaceous desert, the new pterosaur was named after the formation it was found within.
Palaeoecology
The Caiuajara lived during the Cretaceous period in the desert dunes of what is now southern Brazil. They congregated near inland sand lakes and faced the risk of death from desert storms.
