DIN Dinosaur Files - Tyrannosaurus Rex Breeding

Hello again, DIN employees!

Luis Balderra is back! Love is in the air — it’s almost Valentine's Day, so we've asked him to give you all an in-depth view of the love lives of certain dinosaurs. He’s going to talk us through creating the best environment for your T. rex and why that’s important for the breeding programs we have here at the Dinosaur Integration Network.

“Hey folks! I’m back again to talk about paleo-ecology at DIN. And honestly... I could talk about this forever!

This time, the team has asked me to get into the details about breeding for specific species, so I'm starting with the ever-popular T. rex.

Before you even get into breeding a Tyrannosaurus Rex, it's very important that you make sure their enclosures are up to par. Like with any species, they need to be comfortable in their environment to have the best chance of flourishing.

These dinosaurs need plenty of space to roam with a mix of pasture, arid areas, foliage cover and bodies of water. They are not a solitary species, so they will thrive in groups and won't become uncomfortable with any number of females and juveniles. However, as your T. rex population grows you will have to increase their enclosure space to make room for these stout dinosaurs!

Once T. rex is comfortable in their enclosure, they’ll need a nest! Each species has a different preferences for their nest, including its visibility to guests. A Tyrannosaurus Rex needs a large nest, hidden from view, to be comfortable breeding. Once paired, this species typically forms a lifelong bond with their mate after its first successful breeding.

Juveniles will have their own environmental needs once they arrive! While an adult T. rex needs more space and live prey to hunt, juveniles will need meat feeders, so make sure you modify their enclosure to care for the whole family unit.

Remember happy dinosaurs will make more happy dinosaurs! The healthier and better cared for each generation is, the more likely their juveniles will be happy and healthy too."

A huge thanks to Luis Balderra for his fantastic overview of T. rex breeding! He'll be covering a couple of other species over the next few days so don't forget to check back to learn more about the romantic side of our dinosaurs.
